Getting into the head of a zombie is a bit backward from the usual goal of deader fiction, but this zombie is reasonably funny when he doesn't try too hard, and, really, the full title alone is worth the price.

If this were a Stephen King novel which, in a sort of alternate-reality it is very MUCH like a King work , you would be rooting for the survivors to succeed, no matter what obstacles they come across. You feel sympathy when someone dies from an attack by a human. It would be easy to have written the characters as shallow cariactures of an overblown genre, but Calkins-Treworgy is clearly smarter than that. When we met Bob in the first novel, he had been recently turned and was trying to figure out his place in the world.
His humanity, morals and ethics are shifting away from the desire to be living and the need to take care of his Undead brothers and sisters. By creating these personalities, he has made it easy for the reader to genuinely care about these zombies as unnatural as that may be. The darker turn of this novel gives it a much more apocalyptic feel, and readers who like their zombie tales a bit on the dark side may find this outing a bit more to their taste than the lighter fare of Motor City Shambler.
Without giving away the ending, Calkins-Treworgy has definitely left things open for at least one more work in this series, but after Forward, Shamble!

I, for one, will be enormously disappointed if and when the series comes to a close. Add this one to your must-read list. And be careful with the next person you see shambling towards you…. As always, we hope you will help support independent publishing by purchasing directly from the publisher.
